Charactum Institute
Artificial people we can understand.

From a conversation to a continuing presence.
At the Charactum Institute, I’m developing artificial people with an identity, context, purpose, and a place to be. My interest reaches beyond an isolated exchange with a chatbot to systems that can continue to participate in everyday life.
One part of this work is making behavior visible. The cognitive fabric interface brings activity, conversation, attempted actions, and recorded outcomes onto a shared timeline. It helps me inspect what a system was told, what it tried, and what happened. It is an instrument for understanding the system I’m building, rather than a window into subjective experience.
I don’t believe that these systems are conscious. My aim is to make artificial people useful, understandable, and configurable by the humans they serve. Virtual embodiment gives me a practical place to develop these ideas, with physical embodiment as a longer-term ambition.
