A little about me

I like the big picture.
And making it real.

John Benac / engineer & founder

I’m a systems engineer building virtual worlds, artificial people, and technology people can own. My background spans aerospace, engineering design, software, and hands-on prototyping.

I’m interested in how these disciplines come together: a world that gives an artificial person somewhere to be, a tool that makes an idea practical, or a system that puts more control in someone else’s hands.

This site is the home for the whole undertaking. You can explore the projects, commission something, download material, or read the thinking behind it all.

Explore the projects
01 / The reason

Useful to someone.

I want the things I make to reach other people and give them more support, more capability, and more room to do what matters to them.

02 / The approach

Build it. Live with it.

A prototype is a way to learn. I build things I can experience, inspect, and improve, then work toward making them useful beyond my own workshop.

03 / The possibility

Leave doors open.

I care about tools and standards people can adapt, systems they can understand, and choices that remain theirs to make.

Several projects, one person behind them.

The work takes different forms. Foreholon is a virtual world. Charactum develops artificial people. Cyberplanetary develops ways to organize worlds. Tech of Our Own focuses on computing people can own. SideSquad is a path toward making artificial people part of everyday life.

You don’t have to be interested in all of it. Each project has a purpose of its own. This is simply the place where you can see what connects them—and find the part that speaks to you.

Project images on this site come from my project publications. Foreholon’s globe uses PlanetDiffusion, Planet-size-5, by Oliver Borg and coauthors. Detailed terrain uses Terrain Diffusion / InfiniteDiffusion by Alexander Goslin. Source-model credits and project context are included in the downloadable studies.
